The Fight Continues! Crown Heights North Association and Friends of 920 Park have retained veteran land-use, zoning and preservation attorney Michael Hiller to investigate a lawsuit against the Landmarks Preservation Committee under Article 78 of the New York state Civil Practice Law and Rules to stop the construction of the massive proposed apartment complex currently designated as 955-959 Sterling Place. We would also ask the court to stop work at the site until our case is heard, and we’re also considering several other legal strategies.
Michael Hiller is known as one of the best preservationist lawyers in New York, and he thinks we have a very strong case. But we can’t do any of this without your help. Please consider a tax-deductible donation to our legal defense fund.
On December 9, 2021, LPC approved the developer’s request to build Phase 1, “constructing the curb cut and excavation and installation of the foundation for the new building.” As of December 15th, 2021 four new building permits were approved by the Department of Buildings which can be seen here. These were filed under a different address than the 959 Sterling Place address presented to the LPC, which we assume was an intentional move to fly under the community’s radar. Fences and excavators showed up two days before Christmas to start digging.
